Davis had been battling complications from Parkinson’s Disease, a struggle that eventually took his life but could never dim the lasting impact of his athletic career.
Nicknamed “Tough Tony,” Davis was a cornerstone of Nebraska football in the early 1970s, becoming a fan favorite for his combination of speed, power, and fearless play on the field. He made an unforgettable debut during Tom Osborne’s first game as head coach in 1973, a rain-soaked contest at Nebraska Memorial Stadium against UCLA. That game, which was broadcast nationally on ABC-TV and witnessed by a sellout crowd, saw Davis make an indelible mark on Cornhusker lore. On one of his touchdowns, Davis famously punched the chain-link fence just beyond the north endline, cementing his reputation as a fierce competitor and fan favorite.
